Magdalen College in Warner, New Hampshire, has launched its 35th anniversary celebration, which will include campus appearances by Francis Cardinal Arinze, Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments; Sean Cardinal O’Malley of Boston; papal biographer Brennan Pursell; Inside the Vatican editor-in-chief Dr. Robert Moynihan; and pro-life musician Tony Melendez.
Pursell, the author of the widely acclaimed Benedict of Bavaria: An Intimate Portrait of the Pope and His Homeland, will speak during Parents’ Weekend on Oct. 18. He is an associate professor of history at DeSales University and a Newman Fellow of The Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education, the research division of The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS).
CNS recommends Magdalen for its strong Catholic identity in The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. Among Magdalen’s unique features are its strong Program of Studies core curriculum, the granting of an Apostolic Catechetical Diploma to every qualified graduate and a talented choir which includes the entire student body.
The Newman Guide’s editor and director of The Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education, Joseph A. Esposito, said, “Congratulations to Magdalen College on its 35th anniversary. It has made an important impact on Catholic higher education in New England and throughout the nation, and we fully expect it to be even more influential in the future.” Esposito spoke at Magdalen’s President’s Council Dinner earlier this year.
In a letter to Magdalen’s President Jeffrey Karls for the college’s 35th anniversary program booklet, CNS President Patrick J. Reilly wrote: “The coincidence of Magdalen College’s 35th anniversary and The Cardinal Newman Society’s 15th anniversary is a happy one, as together we celebrate the ongoing renewal of Catholic higher education in the United States.”
