Unique Program to Target Young Faculty
The Society of Catholic Social Scientists and The Cardinal Newman Society’s Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education have announced a Summer Institute of Catholic Social Thought to be held June 1-5 at The Catholic University of America.
The five-day program, which will cover Catholic teachings in eight social science disciplines, is targeted toward Catholic college faculty members and even graduate students who are seeking to further enhance their formation.
Academics can attend as individuals or they can be sponsored by their academic institutions. For more information, call (202) 319-5445. The program brochure and application are also available at the Center’s website here.
According to institute director Rev. Paul Sullins, a professor of sociology at Catholic University, “This intensive program provides an opportunity for younger academics to help put the social sciences and their own discipline into a Catholic framework. They will enhance their ability to put new strategies into teaching and research.”
The institute runs from Monday, June 1, to Friday, June 5. The first day will devote four sessions to such important documents as the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church and Ex corde Ecclesiae. The second day will provide a broad framework for further integrating Catholicism and the social sciences.
According to Father Sullins, the third day will cover psychology, political science and law; the fourth day, history, sociology and anthropology; and the last day will focus on economics and business.
Joseph A. Esposito, director of The Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education, said, “This is a unique program that can be transformational for younger faculty members. Even strongly committed Catholic academics sometimes need a road map for Catholic social teachings. When you add to that various ideas on how to introduce these key documents into the classroom, you have a first-rate series of tutorials.”
“We are delighted to cosponsor this institute with the prestigious Society of Catholic Social Scientists and are indebted to Father Sullins for developing it and assembling a group of outstanding Catholic faculty,” Esposito added.
According to Father Sullins, “We have gathered together some of the best mentors in the country—outstanding Catholic scholars and experts in the Church’s social teachings—to share their experience, wisdom and even struggles in the task of integrating faith and learning in their teaching and research.”
