A national Catholic organization has launched a nationwide campaign urging the University of Notre Dame to rescind the honor of selecting President Barack Obama as its commencement speaker on May 17. The White House and Notre Dame announced the plans today.
The Cardinal Newman Society has launched a website, www.NotreDameScandal.com, including an online petition to Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins, CSC, and contact information for the university. Catholics are urged to join the campaign, and the petition is being circulated among leaders of other Catholic organizations. Notifications will be mailed to tens of thousands of Catholics, including The Cardinal Newman Society’s more than 20,000 members, via e-mail and regular mail in the coming weeks.
The Cardinal Newman Society today faxed a letter to Bishop John D’Arcy of Fort Wayne-South Bend, notifying him of the scandal. Bishop D’Arcy has been publicly critical of performances of The Vagina Monologues at Notre Dame in past years.
