Congratulations Bishop-Elect O’Connell

Today The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) extended heartfelt congratulations to Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., outgoing President of The Catholic University of America, who was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI last Friday, June 4, as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton.

“On behalf of more than 20,000 members of The Cardinal Newman Society, congratulations on your appointment, Bishop-elect O’Connell!” said Patrick J. Reilly, CNS President.

“It is highly significant that our Holy Father chose to elevate Fr. O’Connell to the episcopate,” continued Reilly. “For more than ten years now, he has been a model Catholic college president, setting a trend of strong Catholic identity that will last for generations to come. Our prayer is that God will bless Fr. O’Connell’s good work for the Church as shepherd of the Trenton Diocese.”

Fr. O’Connell, who has served as Catholic University’s President since 1998, is a firm supporter of Ex corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic higher education, and is a Consultor to the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education. The Catholic University of America is listed in The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College by CNS for its strong Catholic identity.

As President, Fr. O’Connell made many contributions to the University’s Catholic identity. He hosted Pope Benedict XVI on campus in April 2009 during his visit which featured the historic Address to Catholic Educators. He led a renaissance of Catholic spirituality on campus, as witnessed by more than 80 young men and 30 young women deciding to enter religious life or the priesthood after graduation.
