St. Edward’s University, a Catholic institution in Austin, Tex., has rejected the application of Equality Texas, a local gay rights advocacy group, to participate in a campus nonprofit internship fair on September 15 due to the organization’s views at odds with Catholic teaching, according to a Life Site News report. “Catholic families will be glad to hear that St. Edward’s University is vigilant in matters concerning its Catholic identity,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS). “The more than 20,000 members of CNS stand behind St. Edward’s administration in this common sense decision, which sets an example for Catholic universities.” Equality Texas lobbies against laws that uphold traditional marriage in the State of Texas. According to Life Site, the organization decried as “uninformed, outdated and homophobic” a recent decision by a Dallas appeals court that struck down gay divorce and reaffirmed the constitutionality of traditional marriage. The Equality Texas blog posted this statement from St. Edward’s Director of the Office of Service and Community Involvement and Assistant Director of Campus Ministry: “In reviewing the mission of Equality Texas it has come to our attention that promoting your organization and volunteer opportunities will be in direct conflict with the mission of St. Edward’s University.” The statement continued: “As a Catholic University, we are rooted in and uphold Catholic Church teaching.” St. Edward’s University spokeswoman Mischelle Diaz also stated, “As a Catholic University, St. Edward’s cannot be expected to endorse any organization that may advocate on issues that are inconsistent with Catholic Church teachings.” The University does have a LGBT group on campus known as “PRIDE,” but Diaz said that Campus Ministry works closely with the group to ensure that it does not conflict with Catholic teaching. Rev. Rick Wilkinson, C.S.C, Director of Campus Ministry, made the distinction that whereas St. Edward’s rejected Equality Texas for lobbying against the Church’s teaching on same-sex “marriage,” PRIDE is focused on anti-discrimination and does not engage in such lobbying, thus passing muster as an official student group, according to Life Site.
