The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has named a former Christendom College official to lead the bishops’ Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development, which oversees the troubled Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Christendom College is a faithful Catholic college recommended in The Newman Guide.
Jonathan Reyes has been a history professor and vice president for academic affairs at Christendom College, a vice president for the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), and most recently director of social ministry for the Archdiocese of Denver. Reyes replaces John Carr, who retired after 25 years.
For several years, CCHD has been criticized for grants to agencies that advocate abortion, contraception, and other positions contrary to Catholic teaching, or that participate in coalitions advocating such positions.
