Franciscan University of Steubenville Students March for Marriage

Thirty Franciscan University of Steubenville students will take part in the March for Marriage in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, March 26.

The students will be joined by Father Dave Morrier, TOR, campus minister, and Dr. John Bergsma, Franciscan University theology professor.

Amanda Brennan, an accounting and theology double major, and the president of the student club Love Revealed, which seeks to uphold the dignity of marriage, sees the negative implications of ignoring that dignity.

“Marriage and family are the foundations of society,” Brennan said. “If we don’t fight for marriage as between a man and a woman, all of society crumbles.”

At 8:30 a.m. march participants will meet at the National Mall and walk down Madison Drive, Third Street, and Constitution Avenue to the U.S. Supreme Court Building. There, the rally will begin at 11:00 a.m., which features live music and numerous speakers, including Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.

On the day of the march, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the Perry case to determine the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the citizens’ initiative approved by California in 2008 to protect marriage. The question of same-sex marriage will also be considered by the court, the next day.

The March for Marriage is organized by the National Organization for Marriage as well as a broad coalition of pro-family organizations, state partners, and Catholic, African-American, Latino, and Protestant leaders.
