According to The Observer, more than 800 students at the University of Notre Dame had their heads shaved or donated hair,to raise nearly $30,000 for cancer research.
The fundraiser The Bald and the Beautiful (TBAB) took place last week, with students contributing more than 1,200 inches of hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Money raised through the fundraiser will also benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation for pediatric cancer research, and Memorial Hospital of South Bend’s pediatric radiation oncology unit.
In addition to student participation, Memorial Hospital patients and their families also attended the event.
Betsy McGovern, co-chair of the event, said that nearly 400 heads were shaved, according to the Observer.
“I think people choose to participate in TBAB because at some point cancer impacts our lives, whether it is through a relative, friend or classmate,” co-chair Caitlin Desmond told the Observer. “So, by donating money and participating in the event, it brings a sense of solidarity with those going through treatments.”
