The Diocese of Harrisburg announced today that Bishop Joseph McFadden died unexpectedly earlier this morning. The bishop was attending a meeting of the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania.
Bishop McFadden served as Chairman for the Education Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He was a strong proponent of Catholic identity in Catholic education at all levels.
"The Cardinal Newman Society is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Bishop McFadden," said Patrick J. Reilly, the Society’s President. "We were privileged to work with Bishop McFadden and are grateful for his leadership in promoting authentic Catholic learning and formation."
In November 2012, Bishop McFadden spoke to a meeting of Catholic college presidents organized by the Newman Society's Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education.
"Bishop McFadden spoke to us frankly about the importance of promoting and defending faithful Catholic education, and he urged our Center to keep up its good work," continued Reilly. "His leadership and love for Catholic education will be sorely missed by Catholics all over the country. Please keep him in your prayers."
Bishop McFadden served as the 10th Bishop of Harrisburg, having been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in June 2010.
