A Catholic News Service video features an interview by Francis X. Rocca with Father Alejandro Crosthwaite, OP, vice-rector for public relations at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, also known as The Angelicum.
In the interview, Fr. Crosthwaite explains Pope Francis’ relationship to the Argentinian Jesuits and his interpretation of liberation theology.
“…he could not support the struggle for justice through arms…through violence,” explains Fr. Crosthwaite. “That’s what he warns his fellow Jesuits…because it’s against what we’re doing as Christians, and it will bring us problems.”
Fr. Crosthwaite points out that poverty and justice were the preeminent issues for then-Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio, but he could not “support this strand of liberation theology.” Instead, he worked behind the scenes to negotiate with the government for the release of his fellow Jesuits.
The Angelicum is recommended by TheNewmanGuide.com for its strong Catholic identity.
