The end-of-year sports banquet at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., featured two graduating students who have also committed their energies to The Cardinal Newman Society: Kelly Conroy and Mike Salomon.
Conroy will begin this summer as Marketing and Publications Assistant for The Cardinal Newman Society in Manassas, Va. Salomon is currently a work-study intern in support of Monsignor Stuart Swetland, director of the Society’s Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education and Vice President of Mission and Identity at The Mount.
Both Conroy and Salomon received the University’s Sheridan Award on April 30. According to a Mount St. Mary’s University press release,
The Sheridan Award, which is… voted on by the Mount athletic department, is for the college student-athlete, who, through athletic and academic achievement, has exemplified the spirit and dedication demanded by intercollegiate athletics, and who, through such activity has fostered the ideals of Monsignor John L. Sheridan and Mount St. Mary's University.
Conroy attended John Paul II High School in Tallahassee, Fla., and is completing an MBA program at The Mount.
[Conroy] finished her tennis career with 68 singles victories, which is fourth most in school history. In 2012-13, Conroy tied for second on the team with 17singles wins, including a 6-0 record versus NEC competition. Her 19 singles wins in 2011-12 led the team and tied for the 10th most in school history. She compiled a 16-3 mark at No. 2 singles and 12-5 as part of the Mount’s No. 1 doubles team. Conroy is a three-time member of the NEC Academic Honor Roll and has twice made the NEC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Later this summer she moves to Manassas and begins work at The Cardinal Newman Society.
Salomon hails from Haymarket, Va., and is a graduate of Seton High School in Manassas, Va. He graduates this month with a degree in economics and leaves his mark:
on the men’s tennis team as the Mount’s career leader in singles wins with 74. As a senior, he finished third on the team with 19 wins in singles in leading the Mount to the Northeast Conference semifinals. Salomon was a 2012 First Team All-NEC selection at No. 4 singles following a season with a team-high 24singles victories. He also teamed up with Adam Salam for a team-high 16 doubles wins during the 2011-12 campaign. In the classroom, Salomon has been recognized with three NEC Academic Honor Roll selections to go with three NEC Commissioner’s Honor Roll awards. He also took home the 2012 NEC Scholar-Athlete award for men’s tennis.
Salomon returns to Mount St. Mary’s in the fall to pursue a Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in economics, while also working as the assistant tennis coach and for Monsignor Swetland at The Center.
