According to TheBlaze, Catholic sociologist Dr. Anne Hendershott believes that she was among those targeted by the IRS in the scandal of its audits of individuals and groups deemed to be conservative.
Hendershott says that she was audited in 2010. Auditors wanted to investigate Hendershott’s expenses for writing. Hendershott noted that it was surprising that she was the one being audited, given that her husband is the primary wage-earner, and the couple always files jointly.
“[The IRS agent] didn’t even let me decide when it would be good for me… He didn’t want my husband to come,” she told TheBlaze.
At the meeting, agents asked Hendershott questions regarding bank deposits, where the money came from, and who the organizations were. Hendershott had been writing for numerous Catholic organizations, including the Wall Street Journal, Catholic Advocate and Catholic World Report. Several of her articles were critical of President Barack Obama and his policies. She also produced articles that were critical of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, Catholics United, and Catholic Democrats.
Frightened by the audit, Hendershott ceased writing for the Catholic Advocate.
“It was clear they didn’t like me criticizing the people who helped pass Obamacare,” said Hendershott. “The IRS is very frightening.”
