Fr. Robert Barron Tells Providence College Graduates to Make Their Life a Gift

Fr. Robert Barron, rector of Mundelein Seminary, told Providence College’s graduates to give of themselves on Sunday. “To be filled with God is to be filled with love, and love is giving one’s life away for the sake of the other,” said Fr. Barron, according to the College. “So here is the formula… if you want to be happy… contrive a way to make of your life a gift.”

The College awarded 1,093 degrees at its commencement exercises on May 19.

“Whenever you are tempted to surrender to the forces of injustice and intimidation, remember the divine God is stronger than any tyrant,” said Fr. Barron. “The message of the resurrection is not something quaint and pious; rightly understood, it is still dynamite that can shake the world.”

Father Barron quoted St. Paul, who said in his letter to the Ephesians, “there is a power already at work in you that can do infinitely more than you can ask or imagine.”

Even though every graduate may have plans or goals or ambitions, “if St. Paul is right, the divine Spirit is already working in you, preparing you for a fullness of life that you did not dream was possible,” said Fr. Barron.

Though this might not be the most glamorous or trendsetting path, it will be the one that leads to happiness and fulfillment, he said.

“Young friends, seek with all your hearts to discover what the Holy Spirit wants you to do — and then do it … be ready for spiritual adventure,” Father Barron said.

“If you want to be happy and fulfilled, listen to him. Follow him. Pay attention to the holy longing. Understand that God’s love is more powerful than anything the world can throw at you. Realize your life is not about you,” Father Barron said. "And may the God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, richly bless all of you!"

Fr. Barron was awarded an honorary degree by the College. Follow this link for the entire text of his commencement address.
