Ohio State University President Gordon Gee was scheduled to speak at the graduation ceremony for St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday. He withdrew as the speaker on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
“He made it very clear that he was concerned that his presence at the commencement would detract from the attention on the kids, and I thought that was a very gracious approach by President Gee,” said Dan Garrick, the school's principal, to the AP.
Gee has been under fire for offensive remarks he made regarding the University of Notre Dame and Catholics at an Athletic Council meeting in December. He has publicly apologized for his remarks.
