The Cardinal Newman Society’s Director of Programs Bob Laird has been honored by the Catholic Press Association with a 2013 CPA Award for his coverage of religious liberty issues, together with co-authors Gerri Laird and Mike Manhart.
Their articles were written for the May/June 2012 newsletter, Family Foundations, of The Couple to Couple League, for which Bob has served on the Board of Directors for several years, and he and his wife Gerri are certified instructors in Natural Family Planning.
The Catholic Press Association complimented their work because of its “well informed insight” along with its calls to action for readers.
Bob Laird’s article, “Fighting the HHS Mandate,” chronicles the Obama administration’s refusal to allow many religious groups exemptions from mandatory health insurance requirements.
“Against this backdrop, we must make our voices heard by evangelizing firmly and clearly about the beauty of the Church teachings on marital chastity and confidently offer NFP as the alternative to contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs,” he writes.
Laird recommends several actions in response to the HHS mandate, including praying for the President, keeping abreast of federal legislation, talking to children and friends about religious liberty, and promoting and teaching NFP classes in the local community.
For The Cardinal Newman Society, Laird oversees key programs including the Catholic High School Honor Roll and manages projects for the Society’s Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education.
