Several official departments at the University of San Francisco not only encouraged students to take part in the city’s LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) Pride Parade on June 30 but also provided free t-shirts to students and their guests who signed up to march.
According to the Pride Parade site, the University of San Francisco LGBTQ Caucus for Faculty/Staff marched behind Planned Parenthood and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.
The Cardinal Newman Society recently discovered a June 12 Facebook post for the University’s Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS), which directs readers to the website of the University’s Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good. The website invites students, alumni, faculty and staff to “join University of San Francisco's LGBTQ Caucus to March in the San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade” and to choose which size t-shirt they require.
Moreover, the site thanks several University “co-sponsors” for making the t-shirts possible. These include Human Resources, Health Promotion Services, the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good, and the Office of Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach.
Ironically, the University lists the McCarthy Center on its website extolling its mission as a Jesuit university. It states, “Experience Jesuit Values at USF.”
The BAIS Facebook site elaborates and explicitly thanks the University departments for “graciously providing T-shirts to all USF participants + 1 guest.”
USF Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach also published the offer for free t-shirts on its Facebook site, saying “Come march with USF at the Pride Parade on Sunday, June 30th! RSVP to get your free t-shirt for the march.”
On the day of the march, the twitter account ITweetUSF delivered a “shout out” to the University’s LGBTQ Caucus marching in the LGBT Pride Parade over the summer.
The account which is handled by Associate Dean of Student Academic Services for Branch Campuses Charlene Lobo Soriano tweeted, “Shout out to University of San Francisco's LGBTQ Caucus who are marching in the San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade today!”
