Arlington Bishop Paul Loverde delivered a strong message to students of Christendom College at Mass on Sunday, urging them toward prayer and witness. The bishop linked their education at the faithful Catholic college with a responsibility to take part in the new evangelization.
“Here at Christendom, you practice witnessing to Christ and for Christ in your interactions with one another,” he said, according to a press release from the college. “Here too, you are being equipped to continue this witness, when you leave the Jerusalem of this place to go to the ends of the earth. Yes, Catholic education is inseparably linked to the new evangelization.”
The convocation and Mass kicked off Christendom College’s 37th year. The College in Front Royal, Va., welcomed 157 new students on campus, a record enrollment. The college, which was founded in 1977 under the patronage of Our Lady of Fatima, now boasts 421 undergraduate students.
“Encounter this Lord Jesus in prayer and witness to him though love—love rooted in the truth,” said Bishop Loverde.
After the homily, the entire faculty took part in a profession of faith and an oath of fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
