Nineteen priests, professors, and administrators at the Franciscan University of Steubenville took the Oath of Fidelity at the opening of this academic year, according to the University.
In 1989, the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith provided text for the Oath of Fidelity on Assuming an Office Exercised in the Name of the Church. That same year, Franciscan became the first U.S. college or university to follow that directive to “administer the Oath of Fidelity to its theology faculty,” according to the University.
The President’s Cabinet, Sacred Music Department, and the Philosophy Department were among those who took the Oath at a Mass before Bishop Jeffrey Monforton of the Diocese of Steubenville.
Dr. Michael Healy, chair of the Philosophy Department, stated:
“As philosophers, we uphold the ‘legitimate autonomy of reason’ [John Paul II], but we are also men and women of faith and thus recognize the limits of reason.”
Franciscan University of Steubenville is recommended by the Newman Society in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
