The Eternal Value of Catholic Education: A Parent’s Perspective

In stark contrast to a society that often emphasizes, if not glorifies, the material gains and immediate results of a higher education, the eternal rewards gained from a solid Catholic education was the focus of a speech at the inauguration of the sixth president of Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Mrs. Jamie McAleer, a member of the Board of Trustees and a parent associated with Franciscan for the last 10 years, said “when parents truly understand and believe that there is life beyond this earthly pilgrimage, then they know the importance and benefit of Catholic education.”  She continued:

We as parents are not only the primary educators, but we are responsible for ensuring that our children reach their final destination, which is life eternal with God. This is no small task. That is why it is crucial that we surround ourselves and our children with people who understand this and will help us achieve our goal. Here is where Catholic Education is vital.

McAleer placed her loyalty and trust in the new president of Franciscan, the Rev. Sean Sheridan, TOR, to lead the University through whatever challenges may lie ahead.

“[W]e also know that it is in the darkest of times that the light of faith shines the brightest,” McAleer continued. She described that at the heart of Franciscan’s mission is the “accumulation of knowledge and the encountering of trusted dialogue and sincere friendship.”

Recognizing the sacrifices that parents make to support their children emotionally, financially, and physically to receive a Catholic education, McAleer stated “the best gift a parent can receive: to hope with confidence that your child possesses the wisdom and knowledge he or she needs to travel and complete the journey home to God.”

Franciscan University of Steubenville is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
