Archbishop Francis Chullikatt, the representative of the Holy See to the United Nations, condemned the UN’s recommendations promoting “safe abortion” and homosexuality as “particularly reprehensible,” according to an article on LifeSiteNews.com.
The bold archbishop stated “No abortion is ever ‘safe’ because it kills the life of the child and harms the mother.”
This message about the fundamental right to life is often undermined or ignored at Catholic colleges across the country.
Catholic Education Daily recently reported on a Creighton University law professor who represented an underage girl in an abortion request, and three California Catholic colleges that decided to reassess covering elective abortions in their employee health insurance.
Yet, other Catholic colleges fully embrace the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of life, like those featured in The Newman Guide. Many of the Newman Guide colleges have filed lawsuits against the Obama administration’s HHS mandate, which would force them to provide employee health insurance coverage of contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs.
The archbishop also went on to critique the committee’s use of the expressions “sexual orientation” and “gender identity,” noting there is “no international juridical consensus” on their meaning, and are “used spuriously and very unfortunately in these Comments,” according to LifeSiteNews.com.
Catholic colleges have not always been helpful in guiding students to learn the truth about human sexuality and the proper response to homosexual tendencies. Jesuit-run Fairfield University recently held a panel discussion which seemed to promote the idea that the Church is wrong about sex, and a transgender workshop was held at DePaul University to instruct students and professors on how to be “trans allies in the classroom.”
