Pews Put Out to Pasture at University of San Francisco’s Catholic Church

The Catholic Church on the campus of Jesuit-run University of San Francisco is redecorating by removing pews to make room at the back of the church, near a statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola, for “social gatherings.”

The University of San Francisco celebrates its weekly 8 pm Sunday student Mass at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, which is located on the school’s campus.

In August, the Church bulletin announced that the last three pews in the southeast corner of the church would be removed and put in storage to “create space at the back of the church for social gatherings,” according to an article by California Catholic Daily.

But after an unexpected delay, the pews have been removed this month.

The decision seems to neglect that the Church’s essential mission is evangelization, as Pope Paul VI reminded in his letter On Evangelization in the Modern World (quoting from the Declaration of the Synod Fathers in 1974): “We wish to confirm once more that the task of evangelizing all people constitutes the essential mission of the Church” (14).

Catholic Education Daily hasreported on other incidents at the University of San Francisco in which sharing the Truth of the Faith with others has been neglected in pursuit of secular goals.  For example, this year, the university provided t-shirts to marchers in the homosexual pride parade.

The Jesuit-run university’s future path remains a question now that its current president, the Rev. Stephen A. Privett, S.J., has announced his plans to retire once a successor is chosen.
