Franciscan University Honors Order of Sisters Founded on Campus

Sisters and priestsFranciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio bestowed its 2013 Founders' Award on the Franciscan Sisters TOR of Penance of the Sorrowful Mother on December 7, according to a university press release.

The order was founded 25 years ago on the Franciscan University campus "to renew the contemplative dimension of the Franciscan penitential form of life," according to the release.  Since its founding, the order has grown to include 37 members, with 3 novices, 3 postulants, and 5 candidates.

The school bestowed the award on the order during the Founders' Association Dinner last Saturday.  Mother Katherine Caldwell, TOR, accepted the award for the sisters.

According to the release:

[The sisters] are based in the Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery in Toronto, Ohio. Following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, they embrace the charisms of penance, crucified love, mercy, poverty, and contemplation.

The TOR sisters have two mission houses affiliated with Franciscan University, the Santa Chiara Mission House, located on the main campus, and the Greccio Mission House, located at the university’s study abroad site in Gaming, Austria. Through these mission houses, the sisters offer spiritual direction, Bible study, and residence hall advising to the students. They also coordinate Student Evangelization Networking Teams and run formation and retreat programs. Some sisters accompany students on spring break mission trips to places including Ecuador, Honduras, Chicago, and New York.

In downtown Steubenville, the sisters operate the Heart of Mary Mission House, where they serve the poor. They run the Samaritan House Thrift Store, a clothing store and emergency food center, where they also offer weekly praise and worship and Scripture study. Through LAMP Ministry, the sisters host a soup kitchen that serves over 100 people twice a month.

Franciscan University of Steubenville is recommended in Franciscan University of Steubenville for its strong Catholic identity.
