Student Group ‘DePaul Outlaws’ Promotes Fundraiser for 'Gender-Affirming' Surgery

An officially recognized student group at DePaul University College of Law is promoting a fundraiser to help pay for “gender-affirming” surgery to remove the breasts of a woman who identifies as a man.

DePaul’s website describes the student organization, the DePaul Outlaws, as one that “seeks to generate awareness about and sensitivity to gay and lesbian issues among the Law School students, faculty and administration.”

The Facebook page for the DePaul Outlaws goes much further though. They are currently inviting students at the largest Catholic university in the country to take part in the fundraiser, saying, “It'll make a great break from studying for exams and looks like it will be great fun! Come on out!”

The event itself is called “Take My Breasts Away,” and is scheduled to take place this Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013. Entertainment for the event will be provided by an organization known as “Naughty Little Productions” and feature numerous, “Windy City Gay Idols.”

Any additional funds raised over and above the cost of the surgery will be donated to the Transformative Justice Law Project of Chicago, Ill., which is, according to their website, “a collective of radical lawyers, social workers, activists, and community organizers who are deeply committed to prison abolition, transformative justice, and gender self-determination.”

The DePaul Outlaws recently linked to a news story about a judge who decided that a Christian baker must bake a cake for a same-sex marriage ceremony or face fines. They called it “awesome news!”

Earlier this year, Catholic Education Daily reported that DePaul University sponsored a workshop for students and professors to learn how to be “trans allies in the classroom.”

The event, which was titled “Trans(formation) DePaul,” was sponsored by LGBTQA Student Services, a committee of students, faculty, staff and alumni formed in 2003 to identify the needs of DePaul’s LGBTQA communities and evaluate how the university was responding to those needs, according to the organization’s website.
