Liberal Arts Degree Pays Off in Long Run, Study Finds

A Catholic education centered in the liberal arts has great benefit to the mind and soul—but it may also give students a boost in their careers, a new study shows, reinforcing the benefits of faithful Catholic colleges like those recommended in The Newman Guide.

Liberal arts majors in college make more money on average by their mid-50s than those who studied in professional or pre-professional fields, according to a report by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU).

Even though liberal arts majors initially earn less than their counterparts who studied in professional or pre-professional fields, liberal arts majors earn $2,000 more at peak earnings in the 56-60 year-old range when they earn about $66,000, according to Inside Higher Ed.

The report also points out that earnings might not be the only indicator of career success, and that liberal arts majors are “overrepresented in social services professions like social work or counseling.”

Inside Higher Ed also notes the importance of some type of advanced degree for liberal arts majors.  Without it, the liberal arts majors would earn less than those with a baccalaureate professional or pre-professional degree.

With an advanced degree, liberal arts majors increase their earnings by an average of $19,550, while professional or pre-professional majors only increase their earnings by an average of $14,214, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Those who major in engineering, math and science, however, earn higher average salaries than either liberal arts majors or professional or pre-professional fields, according to Inside Higher Ed.
