College Students Credited as Driving Force in March for Life

Catholic colleges recommended in The Newman Guide are featured for their participation in and efforts surrounding the March for Life in a recent article by The Catholic News Agency.  The article underscores the fact that Catholic college students are a big part of the reason why there were hundreds of thousands of people marching for the right to life in Washington, D.C., on January 22nd

The Catholic News Agency reports on the efforts of The Catholic University of America, Benedictine College, Belmont Abbey College, Christendom College, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Aquinas College and Ave Maria University, which were also highlighted in a recent March for Life social media photo journal by The Cardinal Newman Society.

Located in Washington, D.C., the Catholic University of America (CUA) hosted and fed more than 1,200 students in its athletic center the night before the March, and approximately 500 CUA students attended the March, CNA reported.

CNA outlined other highlights of the March, including Benedictine College carrying the lead banner, Franciscan University of Steubenville traveling through the night to make it in time, Aquinas College sending its largest group ever from the College, and Ave Maria University president Jim Towey live-tweeting from the event.

Other Catholic college students also made significant contributions to the cause of the right to life.  The nation’s largest student-run pro-life conference was hosted at Georgetown University, as The Cardinal Newman Society previously reported.

More than 550 students from the University of Notre Dame were planning on attending the March for Life.  Due to inclement weather, some of the buses that were scheduled to leave later were unable to come, but still more than 320 students made the journey from Indiana to Washington, D.C., according to Notre Dame’s Right to Life Facebook page.

Notre Dame’s Right to Life club also won Students for Life of America’s “pregnant on campus” group of the year award for the “amazing strides our University and club have taken to support the choice for life on our campus,” according to its Facebook page.  Students for Life of America’s conference, which was hosted the day before the March for Life, gathered 2,500 college students for a day of education, training and networking with pro-life leaders.

Catholic groups on public university campuses also made a strong witness to the dignity of all life.  A group of more than 50 students from Florida State University, part of the Catholic Student Union which is run in part by the Brotherhood of Hope, told The Cardinal Newman Society that they braved the frigid temperatures to be present at the March for Life.
