John Paul the Great Catholic University in Escondido, Calif., is partnering with Catholic Voices USA to offer media training workshops to help lay Catholics “publicly witness to their faith as part of the New Evangelization,” JP Catholic announced.
Participants in the workshops will have the opportunity to discuss effective communications strategies to articulate Church teachings; train to handle newspaper, radio and television interviews; participate in interview simulations; and receive one-on-one coaching.
The first media training workshop will be for undergraduate and graduate students and held from March 26-27. The second session, held from March 28-29, will be a general workshop for lay Catholics. JP Catholic will host both events on its campus in Escondido.
According to JP Catholic:
“More than 200 lay Catholics have been trained over the past two years in our approach,” remarked Scot Landry, executive director of Catholic Voices USA. “Doctors, nurses, lawyers, school teachers, business leaders, full-time moms, engineers and Catholics from many other professions have enthusiastically responded to the call to share, explain and defend the Catholic faith.”
“John Paul the Great Catholic University prepares students professionally and spiritually for careers in media, business and theology,” said Timothy Van Damm, Vice President of Advancement. “In all these future paths, our students are called to impact the culture for Christ. Since Catholic Voices USA is seeking to identify and prepare Catholics to represent the Church in the media, we think it is a great opportunity for our students and for other Catholics in Southern California.”
... Church leaders in the US have encouraged expansion of the Catholic Voices training. Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, recently wrote on CardinalSeansBlog.org that “We are very anxious to see how Catholic Voices will spread its influence in United States, because its mission is so necessary. There is so much polarization in the country, and we need a way of being able to witness to our faith in such a way that it can be heard by secular society. I believe that Catholic Voices has developed a paradigm to do that. This is a great contribution to the life of the Church.”
