A new video made as a part of The Family Project by Focus on the Family offers a glimpse into the heroic sacrifice of a father who gave his life to save his youngest son in 2008.
Thomas Vander Woude, the late husband of Mary Ellen Vander Woude and the father of seven children, was a pilot during the Vietnam War and afterwards worked as a commercial airline pilot, The Washington Post reported.
In the years to come, he would “wear many hats,” including coaching at Seton School in Manassas, Va., one of the Newman Society’s Top 50 Honor Roll schools, and serving as the athletic director at Christendom College in Front Royal, Va., which is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
Thomas Vander Woude and his family attended Holy Trinity Parish in Gainesville, Va., where his oldest son, Father Thomas P. Vander Woude, is the pastor. Holy Trinity is the home parish of The Cardinal Newman Society.
