The Board of Trustees at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., has reappointed Dr. Thomas Powell as president for the next two years, the University announced.
Dr. Powell was appointed president in 2003 and was expected to relinquish his duties at the end of this academic year. Instead, the Dr. Powell will continue to serve in his position, and the search for the next president will be extended.
“The Board is steadfast in its commitment to selectivity in its search for an exceptional leader. After careful consideration, the trustees are extending the presidential search process and are very grateful to President Powell for his ongoing service to Mount St. Mary’s University,” said John Coyne III, Chairman of the Board, in the University press release.
Dr. Powell’s tenure has been marked with “unprecedented growth and success,” as the University reports, and has also been notable for its commitment to strong Catholic identity.
For the past three years, The Cardinal Newman Society’s Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education has had an office at Mount St. Mary’s University.
“Dr. Powell has been a steadfast proponent of Catholic identity at Mount St. Mary’s and has been of great help to The Cardinal Newman Society,” said Patrick J. Reilly, Newman Society president. “We’re enthusiastic about his reappointment and know that the University has every reason to continue his important efforts to strengthen the Catholic identity of the Mount.”
Dr. Powell’s plans for the future of the Mount include the “strengthening of [the University’s] academic programs.” He stated:
This is a critical moment in the Mount’s storied history, as the University is currently involved with self-study reviews for several academic re-accreditations…The search for the next President of our beloved campus will begin soon enough, but for now, there is work to be done in strengthening our academic programs and infrastructure, and to guide us through our re-accreditation efforts.
It is a distinct privilege to serve as President of Mount St. Mary’s University. I am humbled and grateful the Board of Trustees asked me to remain at the helm while the search for my successor continues…Additionally, my wife, Irene, is looking forward to continuing her work with the Mount Family Association as well as coordinating many internal and external community programs and events.”
Mount St. Mary’s University is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
