Ave Maria President Offers Commentary on Supreme Court HHS Mandate Case

Ave Maria University President Jim Towey describes the Obama Administration’s requirement of the HHS mandate as a “methodical attack on religious liberty” in a guest commentary column for the Naples Daily News.

Towey writes regarding the Supreme Court case that began on March 25 in which Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood are issuing their arguments against the HHS mandate, as was reported, and considers what influence the coming decision could have on Ave Maria University.

“Their debate will provide insights into what might ultimately happen with our lawsuit (that has been stayed pending the high court’s ruling),” said Towey.  “My prediction is that the court’s line of questioning will pave the way to a legal victory for us this summer.”

An attack on religious freedom is nothing new for Christians, according to Towey.  He related an example from history:

Last week a delegation of Ave Maria University trustees, donors and their spouses made a pilgrimage to Rome.  We learned about Emperor Constantine’s fourth-century efforts to legalize the practice of Christianity in Rome.  Constantine’s “Edict of Milan” in 313 followed two years after Emperor Galerius (a vicious persecutor of Christians) reluctantly issued an “edict of toleration” which at long last protected the rights of the persecuted Christian minority.  Galerius realized on his death bed that his attack on religious liberty had failed, and he cut his losses.  While no one is accusing President Barack Obama of trying to eliminate Christianity, there is ample evidence that he is trying to limit its practice to the confines of places of worship.  This is not what the First Amendment says.

…My hope is that if a Roman emperor can have a last minute change of heart and cease attacking religious liberty, our American president can do the same. An “edict of toleration” is needed.”

Ave Maria University is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
