Catholic school teachers in Hawaii will be asked to sign a new contract for the next school year which says that teachers may be dismissed for denying the teachings of the Catholic Church or for conduct contrary to those teachings, according to the Honolulu Civil Beat.
The “Standard Teacher Employment Agreement” reportedly must be signed each year and includes abortion, in vitro-fertilization, unmarried cohabitation, homosexual activity, and same-sex unions as fire-able offenses.
“The school expressly reserves the right to terminate the employment of any Teacher, who by word or example, denies the teachings or authority of the Church, or whose personal life or conduct is, based on Catholic teaching, immoral,” states the contract that was reportedly obtained by Honolulu Civil Beat.
Michael Rockers, the superintendent of Catholic schools in Hawaii, reportedly pointed out that Catholic schools are ministries.
“We want to be authentic about what our moral teaching is,” he reportedly said. “We’re trying to be pastoral about this and centered on what’s best for the students.”
