New Online Guide Helps Parents Understand Key Issues, Concerns on Common Core

The Cardinal Newman Society recently launched a new Parent’s Guide to the Common Core on its popular Catholic Is Our Core website.

Catholic Is Our Core is a project of The Cardinal Newman Society that helps Catholic families, educators, and Church leaders better understand the Common Core State Standards and protect the extraordinary legacy of Catholic schooling.  The website, available at CatholicIsOurCore.org, explores the Common Core and concerns about the standards’ potential impact on Catholic schools and students.

“This new Parents’ Guide to Catholic Is Our Core is in response to numerous requests from parents for assistance in looking into the Common Core as it applies to Catholic education,” said Bob Laird, the director of programs at the Newman Society.

“Based on the fundamental Catholic principle of subsidiarity, the Newman Society recognized the need for parents to have a role in the education of their children,” continued Laird.  “Thus, we created the Parent’s Guide highlighting specific features of Catholic Is Our Core to assist parents in making judgments on the Common Core and its potential impact on Catholic schools and students.”

The Parent’s Guide is a map outlining key articles and papers which discuss background to the Common Core.  It includes a fact sheet of concerns that Catholics may have about the Common Core; answers to frequently asked questions; and a list of key papers which address many of the issues surrounding the Common Core. Parents can explore the many articles on the site, public statements from Catholic dioceses, and in-depth analysis of the surrounding issues.

“Much is being said in the press and in the blogosphere concerning this topic,” said Laird. “Through this Parents’ Guide, we want to make sure that Catholics are aware of what is taking place in American education in general and in some of the schools in particular.  And we want to help give parents the knowledge to discuss the key issues.”
