Jesuit Criticized by Vatican for ‘Erroneous’ Theology to Give Santa Clara Commencement Speech

Liberation theologian Father Jon Sobrino, S.J., whose work was criticized by the Vatican as containing “erroneous and dangerous propositions” concerning the divinity of Jesus Christ, will deliver the commencement address to the Jesuit School of Theology graduates of the University of Santa Clara in California, according to the University’s website.

“Although the preoccupation of the Author for the plight of the poor is admirable, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has the obligation to indicate that the aforementioned works of Father Sobrino contain notable discrepancies with the faith of the Church,” stated the 2006 Vatican document criticizing Fr. Sobrino’s books titled Christ the Liberator and Jesus the Liberator.

The Congregation pointed out that certain propositions in those books are “not in conformity with the doctrine of the Church” including the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Incarnation of the Son of God,  and the salvific value of Christ’s death, among other issues.

After the CDF’s notification, Archbishop Fernando Sanez Lacalle, then archbishop of San Salvador, reportedly barred Fr. Sobrino from teaching theology in any Catholic center “until he revises his conclusions on a basic point of our faith: the divinity of Jesus Christ who is truly the Son of God made man.”

Fr. Sobrino’s  archbishop also forbade him from publishing. “The Holy See deems that the conclusions of the theological writings which Fr. Sobrino published do not agree with the doctrine of the Church,” declared the archbishop.
