Gary Gates of The Williams Institute at UCLA, who has testified in court in favor of same-sex marriage, will be speaking at the Gonzaga University School of Law on “LGBT Demographics and the Public Square” on Holy Thursday, according to the School’s website.
“This presentation will summarize the demographic characteristics of LGBT populations in the US and show how empirical evidence often contradicts popular perceptions about this community,” states Gonzaga. “The presentation will also consider how demographic and other LGBT-related social science research has effected public debate and discourse related to public policy issues effecting the LGBT community.”
Gates co-authored TheG ay and Lesbian Atlas and reportedly recently testified in favor of same-sex marriage in Michigan. He also filed an amicus curiae brief against the Defense of Marriage Act in the U.S. vs. Windsor case.
Gates, who said in an interview published at gaylife.about.com that he once attended a seminary, also said he is no longer active in the Church and that “many of my core beliefs conflict with those of institutionalized religion.”
