‘FOX & Friends’ Spotlights Common Core Concerns in Newman Society Interview

In an interview on FOX News Channel on Holy Thursday, The Cardinal Newman Society’s director of programs, Bob Laird, pointed out the “fundamental difference” in the goals of the Common Core State Standards and of Catholic education.

“Common Core is basically an untested experiment by the government in order to prepare kids for college, junior college, and jobs,” said Laird in the interview on FOX & Friends.  “…So there’s a fundamental difference in what Common Core is doing – it’s preparing kids for what happens after 18, versus preparing kids for life.”

Laird also stressed that parents are the primary educators of their children and yet their concerns have not always been heard in the Common Core debate.

“Parents are cut out of this system.” Laird continued. “…So you’re hearing these loud protests by parents who don’t like some of the material.  Well, it’s their responsibility and they should have the primary say as to what goes into this.”

“Beauty, truth, and knowledge” are not emphasized when schools adopt the Common Core, Laird noted in a previous interview on FOX News Channel
