Fr. Terence Henry: Christendom Grads Fight Culture of Death on ‘Front Lines’

Father Terence Henry, TOR, chancellor of Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, was recently honored for his commitment to the dignity of all human life and delivered a strong pro-life message during commencement ceremonies at Christendom College in Front Royal, Va.

Fr. Henry was awarded the Pro Deo et Patria Medal at Christendom College’s commencement exercises for “outstanding service to God, the Church, and the country” and for living his “faith concretely in the public square.”  Franciscan University reports

Christendom President Dr. Timothy O'Donnell noted Father Henry's commitment to life issues, saying he observed Father Henry each year with Franciscan University students at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. He also praised Father Henry for opposing the Health and Human Services mandate and for establishing the Franciscan University Institute of Bioethics during his presidency in response to attacks on the dignity of human life.

At Christendom College’s Baccalaureate Mass, Fr. Henry called on graduating students to find their own mission and to stand for life, the family, the aged and youth.  Christendom College reports

“We simply would not be if we did not have a mission,” Fr. Henry said. “What is our task? To discover the unique gifts He has given us.  You did a lot of discovery here in four years, but you’re not done. You’ve only scratched the surface of the iceberg… that is your challenge, dear graduates. To discover His mission and to discover the unique gifts He has given you to accomplish it. You are needed on the front lines wherever the culture of death is pressing in.”

Fr. Henry said that the culture of death is attacking from all sides and that the graduates need to stand up against it. He explained that regiments in the Civil War would stand and fight and know that they were protected to their left and right because they would feel the elbow of the soldier next to them.

“No Catholic in the United States today who is standing for pro-life, who is standing for the family, who is standing for the aged or the very young, is ever not going to feel an elbow, because they know that the graduates of this fine college—Christendom College—will be standing there with them. Standing there combatting that culture. May you always be on the front lines fighting that culture of death and may God bless you for that as you leave us.”

Franciscan University of Steubenville and Christendom College are recommended in The Newman Guide for their strong Catholic identity.
