Online Broadcast to Consider ‘Challenges to Notre Dame’s Catholic Identity’

The Sycamore Trust, an organization committed to strengthening the University of Notre Dame’s Catholic identity, is inviting people to join them online for a live broadcast of their annual breakfast that will include speakers such as Notre Dame professors Gerald Bradley and Father Wilson Miscamble, C.S.C.

The theme of this year’s breakfast is “The Church, Missionary Secularism, and the University: Challenges to Notre Dame’s Catholic Identity.” Speakers will discuss issues relating to the Catholic identity of the University.

Professor Bradley teaches legal ethics and constitutional law and is recognized as a leading expert on religious freedom. Fr. Miscamble, whose most recent book is For Notre Dame:The Battle for the Heart and Soul of a University, is the former chair of the History Department, the past president of the Notre Dame chapter of Faculty for Life, and remains one of the most popular professors on campus.

Recent graduate Michael Bradley ('14) will be a co-recipient of Sycamore Trust's Student Award for his contributions to Notre Dame's Catholic identity. Michael, besides being editor-in-chief of The Irish Rover, was also one of the founders of the group Students for Child-Oriented Policy (SCOP) which, although upholding Catholic teaching on marriage, was recently denied recognition by the University.

Madeline Gillen ('14) will also be honored for her contributions to Notre Dame's Catholic identity as the managing editor of The Irish Rover and co-chair of the Edith Stein Project at Notre Dame, an annual conference which focuses on human dignity, identity and sexuality issues.

William Dempsey (’52), the president of Sycamore Trust, will also serve as a panelist for the event.
