Ave Maria University President Jim Towey recently reflected on a mission trip that he led for twelve students to Calcutta, India.
Towey and the Ave Maria students served with Blessed Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity from May 12 to 23, assisting in various capacities, including serving handicapped children.
Mother Teresa “was a guiding light in my own life,” Towey stated, having had the opportunity to work with her for 12 years.
On the service trip, the students had the opportunity to “see the environment that inspired Mother Teresa’s vocation and imitate her legendary compassion.”
“In the process, [the students] found that these individuals had a gift to give them too,” Towey explained.
“These mission trips are at the heart of what Ave Maria’s educational experience is all about—learning about your faith, and putting your faith into action.”
Ave Maria recently dedicated a Mother Teresa Exhibition Hall on campus, which is the only public display in the United States of Mother Teresa’s life story and artifacts, as was reported.
Ave Maria University is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
