Dr. Timothy O’Donnell, president of Christendom College in Front Royal, Va., will continue his work as a pontifical consultor, the College reported. Earlier this month, Pope Francis reconfirmed Dr. O’Donnell’s appointment as consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Family. This is the second time Dr.O’Donnell’s service with the council has been renewed.
According to the College, O’Donnell expressed his gratitude for the chance to remain in the role. “It is a great honor to be asked to continue to serve the universal church,” he said. “Given the assaults on marriage and the family today, this continues to be a crucial area, not only in terms of advancing the teachings of the Church, but even the common good of society.”
The Pontifical Council for the Family aims to assist families in fulfilling their missions of both education and apostolic work. O’Donnell’s duties as consultor include reporting to the Vatican about “the state of the family based on the insights of the English speaking countries” and addressing the Plenary Assemblies of the Pontifical Council, the College stated.
His appointment, initially made by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002, was renewed for the first time in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI.
The Cardinal Newman Society reported last year on O’Donnell’s attendance at both a meeting of the Pontifical Commission on Latin America and the Pontifical Council for the Family’s Plenary Assembly.
Christendom College is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
