Former Polish PM to Speak on Legacy of JPII at Franciscan’s Austria Campus

jp2Franciscan University of Steubenville issued a news release on Aug. 25 stating that former Polish Prime Minister Hanna Suchocka will speak at an Austrian symposium, held at Franciscan’s study abroad site, on the legacy and contributions of Pope Saint John Paul II. The symposium will take place in Gaming, Austria on September 13 and is being held to honor John Paul II’s canonization as well as the 25th anniversary of the fall of communism in Eastern Europe.

Hanna Suchocka served as the fifth prime minster of post-communist Poland as well as Poland’s Ambassador to the Holy See for ten years. Her talk is entitled “Poland at the 25th Anniversary of the Fall of Communism and the Contributions of John Paul II.”

The symposium has been organized by the Language and Catechetical Institute (LCI), the mission of which is “to form young leaders for the New Evangelization in Eastern Europe and beyond.” According to the University, St. John Paul II’s call to evangelization inspired the founding of the Institute. LCI co-director Jennifer Healy stated in the news release that “the legacy of John Paul II is the new springtime of the Church [and] all the initiatives for the new evangelization in every field.”

Several workshops and events will take place at the symposium, including talks on “John Paul the Great: His Life and Work” and “John Paul II’s Vision for Marriage and Family.” Mass and Vespers are included in the day’s events, culminating with a classical music concert and reception.

The public can learn more or register on the Language and Catechetical Institute’s website.

The Franciscan University of Steubenville is recommended in The Newman Guide for its strong Catholic identity.
