Four Newman Guide Colleges Named Top Conservative Colleges

Four of the colleges recommended by The Cardinal Newman Society in The Newman Guide to Catholic Colleges have been named to the "Top Conservative College" list released by the Young America's Foundation (YAF). Christendom College, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Thomas Aquinas College (in California), and Thomas More College (in New Hampshire) were honored with that distinction. The “Top Conservative College” list features institutions that proclaim, through their mission and programs, a dedication to discovering, maintaining, and strengthening the conservative values of their students, according to the YAF. These colleges, they say, offer an alternative to the liberal status quo, because they allow and encourage conservative students to explore conservative ideas and authors.  The organization sought to see which colleges offered coursework and scholarship in conservative thought and emphasized principles including smaller government, strong national defense, free enterprise, and traditional values.  Furthermore, they looked for those colleges that avoided trends in academe by continuing to study Western Civilization instead of straying toward the study of Marxism, feminism, sexuality, postmodernism, and what they term other distractions that do not give students a complete understanding of our country, our culture, and its founding principles. Ron Meyer, spokesperson for the Young America's Foundation, told The Cardinal Newman Society that "the Catholic movement should be commended for having so many colleges on the list." He said he believed their presence on the list affirms that Christianity is the basis for Western civilization. "If you value western civilization, you value Christianity as well." "Students who are interested in going to a college which does not bow down to today’s political correctness should certainly pay special attention to this list,” said Christendom’s Admissions Director Tom McFadden. “Christendom is certainly a conservative college and we appreciate the fact that the Young America’s Foundation has done its homework and seen the merit in what we offer our students. We are glad to be a part of the list.” The Top Conservative College list includes Christendom College, College of the Ozarks, Franciscan University, Grove City College, Harding University, Hillsdale College, The King's College, Liberty University, Patrick Henry College, Regent University, Saint Vincent College, Thomas Aquinas College, Thomas More College, and Wisconsin Lutheran College.
