Catholic College Presidents Join Fight to Lower Drinking Age

(9/23/08)  "...supports informed and unimpeded debate on the 21 year-old drinking age."

Sixteen Catholic College presidents have joined the Amethyst Initiative, a group which “supports informed and unimpeded debate on the 21 year-old drinking age.” Members signed a statement citing “that the problem of irresponsible drinking by young people continues despite the minimum legal drinking age of 21, and there is a culture of dangerous binge drinking on many campuses.” Signers of the initiative include presidents from: Avila University, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, College of St. Joseph, Dominican University of California, Fairfield University, Holy Cross College, King’s College, Loras College, Manhattan College, Marian Court College, Quincy University, Saint Joseph College, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Leo University, Santa Clara University, and University of the Incarnate Word. However, some have criticized Amethyst. Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., President of Gonzaga University, stated: "Maintaining the current drinking age at 21 may well have a beneficial effect in curbing binge drinking.” Source: Amethyst Initiative and Gonzaga Bulletin
