(11/24/08) Faculty members comment weeks after the election
Georgetown University employees ranked high among donors to pro-abortion President-elect Obama’s bid for the White House, according to findings published by the Chronicle of Higher Education last month. Although The Cardinal Newman Society reported on the findings more than a week before the presidential election, Georgetown faculty are now commenting on the study in a recent Hoya article.
Georgetown employees placed among the top 25 employers in the United States giving donations to the Obama campaign. And Georgetown employees placed seventh among all colleges and universities in donations. It was the only Catholic college to make it to the top ten in the study’s findings.
Vincent Miller, an associate professor in theology at Georgetown, served as a member of Obama’s Catholic Advisory Committee during the presidential campaign. “Life issues hold preeminence for Catholics, but the Bishops Conference has long made clear that these are not the only issues that Catholic voters must consider,” Miller said. Georgetown’s Father Reese said that Catholics “…concluded that politically there was no future in legal restrictions...” for abortion.
