(12/3/08) "Why are these bishops acting like functionaries of the Republican Party?"
In an article for the National Catholic Reporter Nicholas Cafardi, a professor of law at Duquesne University, writes that the Catholic Church in America is currently held captive by the Republican Party. Referring to comments made on the disciplining of pro-abortion Catholic politicians at the recent USCCB meeting in Baltimore, Cafardi asks, “Why are these bishops acting like functionaries of the Republican Party?” He argues that the focus of the Catholic Church on overturning Roe v. Wade, on the “legal solution” to abortion, has “deprived these bishops of their prophetic voice on so many other issues.”
Nicholas Cafardi made headlines earlier this year when he declared that “we have lost the abortion battle—permanently.” He joined Pepperdine Law professor Douglas Kmiec in making the argument that Catholics can vote for pro-abortion Barack Obama in good conscience. Cafardi served on Obama’s National Catholic Advisory Committee during the 2008 presidential election alongside eight other professors of Catholic universities. Source: National Catholic Reporter
