College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., is hosting a public discussion entitled, “Contemporary Physics and Christian Faith: Conflict or Consonance?” between alumnus Rev. Paul A. Schweitzer, S.J., who is a mathematics professor in Brazil, and Holy Cross physics professor Matthew Koss, an avowed atheist. Father Schweitzer defends the position that the “indeterminacy of quantum mechanics combined with the theory of chaos show both ‘how God can act in the world without violating the laws of nature he created, and in a certain sense how we humans can have free will.’” Professor Koss, on the other hand, “does not believe that scientific reasoning is compatible with divine action.” The event is sponsored by the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture at the College of the Holy Cross and will take place on Monday, March 33.
