(11/9/09) "one of the most defining contrasts . . . is just that-- Catholicism."
An article in the Seattle University Spectator compares and contrasts the emphases placed on Catholic identity at two Catholic universities in Washington state: Gonzaga University in Spokane and Seattle University in Seattle. Both institutions have Jesuit affiliations. The article notes, “one of the most defining contrasts between the Northwest’s two Jesuit Catholic institutions is just that–– Catholicism.” It is mentioned that Gonzaga “has garnered the reputation as being a far more Catholic school” with a much higher Catholic population in the student body. According to a report mentioned in the article, about 15 percent of Seattle U.’s student body are practicing Catholics. Whereas Gonzaga reportedly fills its 800-seat church for Sunday Masses, Seattle U. “struggles to fill its pews in its much smaller chapel on Sundays,” save during one evening Mass. Seattle U. hosted a panel on “Faith and Reproductive Justice” last May which featured a “chaplain” from Planned Parenthood. In August, Gonzaga’s Events Manager praised Planned Parenthood in a leaked e-mail. Source: Seattle University Spectator
