(2/4/09) "The mission of the Catholic university is not complete if it does not aspire to evangelize."
During a Catholic higher education seminar in Madrid, Cardinal Paul Poupard, a former President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said that Catholic universities must make “the comprehensive formation of the person” a main focus in every area of knowledge. He said that only by seeking the growth of the human being will universities help to avoid “a world dominated by soulless experts.” He also said, “The mission of the Catholic university is not complete if it does not aspire to evangelize,” and Catholic universities have a mission of “passionate service to the truth.” He called on professors to “be teachers of their students and not only instructors.” Cardinal Poupard added, “The future of humanity is in the hands of those who know [how] to give to upcoming generations reasons to live and reasons to hope.” Catholic universities must not become “mere degree factories,” he warned.
